VERMICULITE: A gift from nature
VERMICULITE is a fascinating natural raw material. Predestined for use in the field of fire protection and thermal insulation. Completely fibre-free, proven to be non-toxic, and non-combustible by nature. VERMICULITE is a class A1 highly porous mineral (non-combustible and highly insulating). It impresses with its low weight and also acts as a long-term store of fluids.
Earth, fire, water, air: the four basic elements determine the properties of the unique mineral VERMICULITE. Produced by weathering, it has been resting in the ground for millions of years. Water is chemically bound between the layers of its plate-like structure. We thermally process the natural raw material after it is gently extracted by opencast mining. A short firing period in special furnaces rapidly drives out the water of crystallisation – the mineral swells to 20 to 30 times its volume. In this process, air chambers are formed: these give VERMICULITE its excellent thermal-insulation properties and unmatched hygroscopic capabilities, as well as the ability to withstand fire temperatures of more than 1,200 °C – without any additives. VERMICULITE can absorb and store up to 500% of its own weight in moisture. The expansion process leaves it germ-free and totally harmless to health. VERMICULITE is therefore excellently suited to use as a growing medium or as a carrier for a wide range of soluble substances – for example, it is used in numerous products in the animal-feed industry, in quality soils, in fertilisers and in pesticides. Because of its high fire-resistance rating, it also forms the basis for a wide range of products in the areas of fire protection and thermal insulation for high-temperature applications.
